The Zilco Plastic Bit Burr features a 9 cm diameter plastic disc with burrs oriented toward the horse’s cheek. When the rein is used, the burrs are pulled gently forward toward the nose, prompting the horse to turn away from the pressure. It is suitable for corrective training when a horse hangs to one side or is reluctant to turn. The item is supplied in black colour and is compact and simple to install between the bit and bridle.
Usage
Target Species: Horses
Application: Used during ridden work or lunging when the horse shows a tendency to resist one side, lean, or drift rather than cleanly turning and bending.
Method:
Place the bit burr between the horse’s cheek and the bridle strap, with the burrs facing the horse’s cheek area.
When the rein is engaged, the burrs move forward toward the nose, subtly cueing the horse to turn away from the pressure.
Monitor how the horse responds; adjust training accordingly and remove the burr when the correct turn/becoming more balanced behaviour is achieved.
After use, remove the burr, inspect for wear, clean any dirt or saliva, and store in a dry tack area.
Frequency:
Suitable for each session where the behavioural issue is being addressed.
Use as part of a training plan; discontinue once the horse consistently responds correctly to turning cues without hanging.
Inspect the burr each time; replace if the burrs are worn or the plastic is damaged.
