P.P Martingale by First Rider

The First Rider P.P. Martingale is designed to help stabilise a horse’s head position during ridden work by limiting upward head movement and improving rein contact control. Such equipment is commonly used to prevent the horse from raising its head too high, which can compromise rider control and communication. Constructed from P.P. Usage

• Target Species: Horses (and ponies if sized appropriately)

• Application: Worn as part of the bridle/tack setup to help maintain proper head carriage and support safe, effective rein contact.

• Method:

  1. Fit the martingale according to the horse’s conformation and the discipline’s rules: the neck strap or chest strap should be correctly adjusted so the fork or attachment pulls when the horse raises its head above a comfortable level.

  2. Ensure the martingale is attached to the girth or breastplate (depending on design) and the end is connected to the noseband or bit as prescribed.

  3. Adjust so that at a normal head position, it has ~ 1-2 cm slack (or per manufacturer/instructor guidance), so it only engages when the head rises beyond the desired height.

  4. After the ride, check straps, buckles, and webbing for wear; clean off sweat and grit, store dry.

• Frequency:

  • Use whenever training or ridden work requires stabilised head carriage or when the horse is prone to raising its head excessively.

  • Regular inspection is essential; if webbing frays, buckles corrode or the adjustment becomes loose, replace the martingale.
