Mustad’s Leather Hoof Pads are crafted from solid, heavy-duty buffalo leather, providing natural durability and reliable performance under varied conditions. The leather pad adds a protective barrier between the shoe and the sole, helping absorb shock from ground impact, reducing concussion, and offering the hoof extra comfort and protection, especially useful on hard or abrasive terrain. Pads come in different thicknesses: light (~4 mm), standard (~5.5 mm) or heavy (~7.5 mm), giving farriers flexibility to choose based on the horse’s workload, terrain, and hoof condition.

Usage

Target Species: Horses

Application: Used when fitting or re-shoeing, placed between the hoof sole and horseshoe to provide cushioning, shock absorption, and enhanced hoof protection.

Method:

• After cleaning and preparing the hoof, select the Size 6 pad and the desired thickness (light, standard or heavy).

• Place the pad against the sole so that it aligns correctly with the hoof shape.

• Fit the horseshoe over the hoof + pad, ensuring even contact and correct nail placement.

• Nail and clinch as per standard procedure, making sure the pad lies flat and is not distorting under pressure.

• After riding or heavy work, inspect the pad for wear, check if the pad is still correctly positioned, and replace it when the leather becomes compressed, worn or damaged.

Frequency:

• Suitable for every shoeing session when extra sole protection or shock absorption is required, particularly for horses working on hard, rocky, or uneven ground, or undergoing rehabilitation/therapeutic regimes.
