Kerbl’s Bit Guards are simple yet effective accessories designed to be fitted over the rings or cheeks of a bridle bit. Their purpose is to cushion the contact point between the bit cheek and the horse’s lips, reducing pinching, irritation or damage at the corners of the mouth. According to Kerbl’s specification, the product is sold in pairs “to protect the mouth corners”.

Usage

• Target Species: Horses (and ponies)

• Application: Fitted onto the bit cheeks/rings to provide additional cushioning at the mouth corners before riding or turnout.

• Method:

  • Select the correct size (7 cm or 9 cm) based on the bit ring diameter and fit at the corner of the horse’s mouth.

  • Slide each bit guard over the cheek or ring until it sits snugly against the mouth corner, ensuring it does not interfere with bit action or rein/cheek-mobility.

  • Put the bridle on the horse, adjust the bit position and check that the guards are lying flat and not causing folds of skin or discomfort.

  • After use, remove the bit and inspect the guards for wear, burrs or displacement; rinse or wipe as needed to maintain hygiene.

• Frequency:

  • Use whenever the horse is ridden or bridled and is susceptible to mouth-corner pinching or lip rubbing.

  • Inspect as part of routine tack checks; replace guards if cracked, hardened or no longer fit correctly.
