The 3D Hoofcare ED Eclipse Pad, developed by Ed O’Shaughnessy in collaboration with Derek Poupard and distributed by Jim Blurton, is engineered for racing, speed or remedial applications where hoof weight and frog support are critical. The pad helps stop the frog from descending through peripheral loading of the hoof wall, reducing the risk of sore heels and corns.
Usage
Target Species: Horses (for the hoof of the horse)
Application: Fitted beneath a horseshoe, this pad is used when improved frog support, weight reduction or remedial hoof management is required (e.g., racing, weak heels, heel pain).
Method:
Select the correct size (e.g., size 3 or size 4) based on the hoof/plate width.
Prepare the hoof and shoe as per farrier protocol (clean, fit shoe/trimming, etc).
Place the ED Eclipse pad between the shoe and the hoof, aligning the frog-support zone under the frog area.
Fix the shoe and pad assembly as appropriate (nail/glue, etc), ensuring secure fit & correct alignment.
After use or at shoe change, inspect the pad for wear or deformation, and replace it if compromised.
Frequency:
Use each shoeing cycle when the pad’s function is required.
Inspect at each trim/shoeing interval; replace if the pad shows damage or support is diminished.
Features and Benefits
Lightweight design: Minimises added weight on the hoof—beneficial in racing or performance contexts.
Frog-support technology: Helps prevent descent of the frog and reduces heel stress, which may reduce the risk of heel-corns or soreness.
Multiple sizes available: Size options allow farriers to select the appropriate width for varying hoof sizes, size 3 (outer width ~134 mm, inner width ~86 mm) and size 4 (outer width ~147 mm, inner width ~94 mm) were specified.
Designed for performance use: Tailored for speed, racing, or remedial shoeing where minimal mass and targeted support are prioritized.
