The Mustad E-Series nails are among the most widely used nails in farriery, known for their reliability, consistent geometry and compatibility with a broad range of horseshoes. The E5 size (51 mm) serves medium-sized hooves and standard shoes, while the E6 size (54 mm) is better suited for larger hooves or heavier shoes where extra length ensures proper penetration and secure clinching. These nails feature a rectangular “E-head” design and a shank taper that helps minimise hoof-wall displacement. When driven and clinched properly, they produce a strong, stable hold, making them suitable for riding, training, competition or daily work.
Usage
Target Species: Horses (medium to large hooves; suitable for Thoroughbreds, riding horses, sport horses)
Application: Used for attaching steel or aluminium horseshoes for general riding, training, racing, or heavy-duty work.
Method:
Choose the appropriate size (E5 for standard hoof & shoe combinations, E6 for larger hooves or heavier shoes).
Insert the nail through the shoe’s nail hole, drive through the white-line and exit at the wall, then clinch to secure the shoe.
Ensure nails are driven straight to maintain hoof wall integrity and avoid splits.
After driving and clinching, check the clinches for security and cleanliness, and ensure nail ends are flush and smooth.
Frequency:
Every shoeing cycle is typically every 4–6 weeks, depending on hoof growth and workload.
Replace nails each cycle; do not reuse worn nails to avoid weakening hold.
